How can we make ethical consumption cool?

Remake promotes ethical consumption and raises awareness of the people who make our products and clothing. But instead of showing horror stories about factory conditions, Remake takes a different approach. It aims to promote ethical fashion in an enjoyable way and connects, through stories, the young women in the US who buy clothes with the young women around the world who make them.

I was the Design Director at Remake and my goal was to spread the word about ethical fashion through engaging and fun content. I designed and built the website in WordPress and used infographics and cartoons for social media so our stories would appeal to out target audience. I also created an ad campaign that appeared on the San Francisco MUNI bus system.

Information design can frame our window into reality. You might you see a shirt in a store with the tag, “Super savings $8!” What if instead of the tag, you saw a video about each individual who helped make your shirt? Or what if you were presented with five photos of where your shirt could end up in 50 years? In each of these scenarios, you have a different story about the shirt because of how the information was designed. At Remake, I had the opportunity to explore how design can shape our stories about our world.
